Dakota Pearl Wheeler Thornton
July 20, 1917 - July 11, 2010
MERRITT ISLAND Our beloved mother, Dakota Wheeler Thornton, cherished grandmother and great grandmother, passed away on Sunday evening July 11, 2010 at home.
Born July 20,1917 in Buckhannon, WV to Leona & John Wheeler. She was pre-deceased by her husband Dr. Charles D. W. Thornton, brother Harry Wheeler & sister Janet Cratty.
During her life she resided in many locations throughout the US. For the last 25 years she was a resident of Merritt Island and active participant in many volunteer organizations. She was Historian of the Brevard Symphony Guild and Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science, Red Hat Society, played bridge regularly, and was a member of the Merritt Island Presbyterian Church and Ruth Circle. She was an honorary life member in the General Federation of Women’s Clubs which included the Merritt Island Women’s Club and held the office of Historian for many years. As an avid reader she enjoyed sharing books with family and friends. She loved traveling the world.
She is survived by her brother John Wheeler of CA, children Darlene Watkins (Dick) of Potomac, MD, Charles Thornton, Jr (Heidrun) of Cape Coral, FL, Constance Frautschi (Ed) of Cave Creek, AZ, Janice Olsen (Dick) of Atlanta, GA and Holly Altieri (Arthur) of Milford, CT, 11 grandchildren & 13 great grandchildren.
Funeral Information
A memorial service will be held at Merritt Island Presbyterian Church, 600 S. Tropical Trail on Saturday July 17 2010 at 10:00 AM.
