William Goldman
January 31, 1915 - August 21, 2010
Merritt Island, FL William "Bill" Goldman, 95, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, died peacefully at his home in Merritt Island, Florida on August 21, 2010. He was born on January 31, 1915, and was preceded in death by his mother and father, Bonnie and Max Goldman; his brother, Robert Goldman and sister, Ethel Goldman; and his first wife, Artie Marie Evans. We are saddened by his passing, but our lives have been enriched by knowing him.
Bill loved sports and was a former feather-weight Golden Gloves champion boxer. He loved children, and many remember the free boxing lessons he gave to the neighborhood boys in his backyard. Bill, known as "the shoemaker," owned, managed and operated shoe repair and dry cleaning shops, first in Chicago, then in Charleston, Beckley and Dunbar, WV. He sold his shop in Dunbar when the urban renewal took place but continued to repair shoes as a sideline while working as a security officer until his retirement at age 76.
Bill never met a stranger, considered everyone he met a friend, and loved to entertain people with his spirited stories and harmonica. He kept his mind sharp working newspaper crossword puzzles and was a voracious reader. After his eyesight failed, he kept the staff at the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped busy sending him audio books.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Zenna June; his two sons, William Thomas Goldman of Tennessee and Benjamin Goldman (Susan) of Kentucky; three daughters, Karolyn Means (Jerry) of Arizona, Sharon Haydon (Ray) of Florida, Linda Long (Eddie) of West Virginia; step-daughter Mobra Hooper (Dwight) of Florida; grandchildren Vicki, Kathy, Debi, Cynthia, Yvonne, Jerry, Suzette, James, Casey, Erica, Bianca, Deke and Caleb; seventeen great-grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
Arrangements entrusted to East Coast Cremation, Rockledge, FL (321) 632-1350.
