Elaine Murphy

January 20, 1918 - July 24, 2010

Sebastian FL

Elaine Murphy 92, a resident of Sebastian FL, died Saturday, July 24th, at VNA Hospice House in Vero Beach FL.

Born in 1918 in Union Town, PA. Elaine moved to Rahway, NJ where she graduated from high school in 1936. She married George W. Murphy in 1942. After George was discharged from the Army Air Corps in 1945 they moved back to Rahway and raised two daughters.

In 1962 she found Elaine's Caprice Fashions. From this dress shop she designed and manufactured high end women's fashion for New York's garment district. Her creations were often seen on celebrities around the world. Some of her work is displayed in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.

In 1978 she and George retired and subsequently moved to Sebastian in 1989.

Elaine loved to cook, garden and travel. She enjoyed entertaining and was always the person who would plan and organize a party with friends or family. Until she died she was always well informed about current events. She was one of those people who could size up any situation and always have a reasonable solution.

She is survived by her daughters. Carol Hemmert of Hingham, MA; and Elaine Tanner of Tucson, AZ. She is also survived by her grandsons, Tim and Ty Hemmert of Boston, MA; and, the apple of her eye, two great grandchildren Matt and Casey. She was predeceased by her husband George in 1997.
